Sunrise Lake

[Sunrise Lake]

The clinging green of the algae held fast to the splintered, coarse oar. Surrounded by trees, rocks, and reeds he realized that his passage was only allowed by the curiosity of the elements. Golden summers were spent on the lake, his life yet unfolded. Returning, a withered old man, he expected the lake to have undergone physical change as well. His hopes were dashed, his mortality confirmed, as he realized the lake lay unchanged. The lake, confident in its immortality mocked the old man with silence.
