Three similar compositions. Three different effects. In the first scene: yellows, greens, and blue-greens were used to set the stage for a plush/saturated scene. The Island Mtn Lg 095G sets the structure while the Cloud w/Sun Lg 108G and the Cloud Bar 119F fill in the surrounding sky. The Tonal Applicator 084E is used to add hue while being careful not to stamp out the defining light rays of the sun. Ducks in Formation 027A and the Tropical Tree 098E were added for illusionistic depth.
Volcanic activity is achieved by switching from the Cloud w/Sun Lg. stamp to the Fountain of Light 104G. In this scene the Tonal Ap. was used to glaze on colors ranging from yellow to magenta. The streaks of light weren't touched to preserve the lightness of the white of the page which, in turn, defines the light in this scene. The Crooked Limb 097E was used to add depth, contrast, and visual texture to the warm composition.
A smoldering after glow takes place in an icy blue scene. Over the Island Mtn Lg 095G the Aurora Borealis: Curtains103G was stamped. Various shades of blue were layered using the T.A. Again, just as the sun's and fountain's rays in the previous scenes, the lighted portion of the card was avoided in the glazing/coloring stage. The Cloud Bar 119F added texture to an otherwise semi bare sky. Geese in Flight 039A was added for visual interest and an opaque white paint pen (these days I use gel pens) added highlights.
