The water mills had long been vacant of their tenants. Those who diverted the stream's water over those great wheels left long ago. Using nature's energy, the gears would turn and crush local grain into flour. The dam diverted most of the waters that fed the stream but there was enough to keep it trickling through the warm summer months. Enough for frogs and crayfish. Enough to soak our tired feet while we gazed into the night sky. I often wondered what stories lay within those creaking beams. What tales would they share? Maybe if I had just listened a little more carefully . . . a little more closely.
