In 1820, West Quoddy Head Light received one of the nations first fog bells. In 1827 congress decided to give the light keeper and extra $60.00 a year for ringing the bell. Over the next 17 years four different fog bells were tried at the West Quoddy. But all were difficult to hear off shore. In 1858 Quoddy got third order Fresnel lens and a half story Victorian keepers house. in 1869 a Daboll Trumpet fog whistle was installed. It replaced the bell. The signal was described as similar to a blast from a steam locomotive.
