"Cabin Ablaze" by Tyra Smith, WI 1998 --compare/contrast project with KN.
Images: Cabin Lg. 141G, Oak Branch 203G, Sun (Wavy Rays) 204G, Cloud Bar 119F, Rocky Peaks 188F, Tonal Ap. Flames 116E, Victory 200A.
Materials: Halos Dye Ink Pads, Marvy Matchables, Vivid! Dye Based Pads, LePlume II Markers, All Night Media Brush Markers, Glossy White Cardstock, Stipple Brushes (Varying Sizes).
Artists/Technique Notes: The entire process was done using varying sizes of stipple brushes to add color to the scene. Using a lighter color to stamp some background images, such as grey for the mountain range, adds a bit of depth and dimension. I only used a small portion of the Cabin stamp, inking it up with a black LePlume Marker to give greater control over which areas I was to use in the final stamped image. Framing the lower 2/3's of the scene with the Oak Branch along the sides/bottom finishes off the piece nicely. The "wisps" of smoke coming off the burning cabin were created using a very tiny paint brush and a grey dye ink pad. -TS
Stipple Brush Note: When using any type of paint brush with dye inks, you need to be sure to use a flat bottom stipple brush and any other smaller brushes you use for detail work need to be the "white" stiff-bristled brushes. Any other type of brush will not pick up/absorb the dye in off of the ink pad. -TS
"Tinder Box Cabin" by Kevin Nakagawa, CA 1999 --compare/contrast project with T.S.
Images: Same as above.
Materials: Dye based ink pads, Color application done with the Tonal Applicator 084E, Glossy Cardstock, Milky Gel Roller (white).
Note: This scene was finished in my typical style with the Tonal Applicator and Glossy Cardstock. Tyra and I decided to try out a project using our own techniques with only a listing of stamps we were both to use in the pieces. In these pieces, she chose the list of stamps. The compositions came out surprisingly pretty similar in positioning but quite different in the surfaces and content. Hers is probably one of the most unique ways I've ever seen any stamp design used in the line --Cabin Lg. 141G. Also, the Tonal Applicator (Flames) were used in a very different way --Flames coming from the burning Cabin. I cracked up when I opened her card after I finished mine --Incidentally, I finished mine only about 9 months after we decided to do the project!. It was a good project and it was interesting to see what came of both of the compositions with the format of the assignment.
